Pioneer Rafting operates
unique eco rafting adventures on New Zealand's largest and swiftest
river ~
the Clutha Mata-Au.
Our eco rafting trips combine a nature experience
with easy whitewater, providing an ideal rafting adventure for
first-timers, families and veteran paddlers.
We navigate the upper reaches of the Clutha
Mata-Au, flowing swiftly from Lake Wanaka into the semi-desert
landscape of Central Otago.
Along the way, we encounter peaceful river
sections, birdlife, and exciting but easy Grade 2-3 whitewater rapids
that everyone can enjoy.
Every trip includes time to relax on the
riverbank, where we 'boil
the billy' to make Tea-Tree tea (picked fresh), pan for fine
alluvial gold, or fossick for gold among the quartz terraces.
Pioneer Rafting is owner-operated by Lewis Verduyn,
or "Finn," who has been described as one of the most experienced raft
guides in New Zealand.
Lewis has pioneered eco rafting,
specializing in quality, sustainable, eco-focused rafting
adventures since 1991. He has a unique affinity with the
river, and
a
genuine desire to share its magic with others.
He often says: "While I guide you, the river guides me."
In 2003, Lewis
initiated a river conservation project to create the Clutha Mata-Au River Parkway,
with a river-length trail, along the entire 338km Clutha Mata-Au
corridor from Lake Wanaka to
the Pacific Ocean.
Lewis
devotes countless volunteer hours to the protection and conservation of
the Clutha Mata-Au. When you raft with Lewis, you are supporting his
river conservation efforts.
We are often told
that the Clutha
Mata-Au is one of the
most beautiful rivers in the world.
Our eco rafting adventures let you
experience both the charm of the scenic river environment and
the
fun of the easy whitewater.
Rafting, especially on a large river,
is one of life's true adventures ...
"We
said there weren't
no home like a raft, after all. Other places do seem so cramped up and
smothery, but a raft don't. You feel mighty free and easy and
comfortable on a raft." ~ Huck Finn.
